About
Team Monkeigh runs casual Warhammer 40,000 events in the central IN area. These events are designed to be wildly different from the larger tournament events so as to cater to those looking for more characterful and surprising games. The emphasis is on the hobby as a whole, not just gameplay.
Entry fees are never charged for smaller events, and small prizes are sometimes handed out for categories such as middle place, best army, or best sportsman.
Larger events may have a nominal fee to cover prizes.
Formats
Events come in multiple formats. Team Monkeigh does not run events that adhere to the modern competitive events. There are plenty of those to choose from already!
Oddball
This is heavily influenced by the earlier editions of 40K, often times with flora and fauna rules from decades ago being updated for use in the modern rulesets.
This format is for usually 1000 points and will comprise of 3-4 games over the course of 1 day. The focus is on thematic, narrative tables and missions that encourage well rounded armies, adaptable gameplay, and a lot of random chance.
These are very much not competitive games. Beginners are welcome here, and the focus is on fun, wacky stuff rather than winning a game. Most scenarios and event rules are there to ensure that all players will be able to blame the event for failure instead of themselves.
Occasionally one of these events will feature a team component, where teams are randomly assigned at the start of the event with each game having some tangible effect on others.
Narrative mini-campaigns can also be done with this format, with each game being influenced by the one before.
Matched Play
This format is based on the GW Grand Tournaments from the early 2000s. It uses parts of the current mission packs for gameplay, but without the standard terrain layouts and a different overall scoring method. Missions will usually involve some special rules to keep things fresh and present new challenges to players.
2000 point armies are the standard used, with some possible limitations based on the event. There will be at least 3 games in these events, with some rare cases having more spread over multiple days, usually a full weekend.
There are multiple categories players compete in, each weighted differently for determining a player's final score. The categories themselves will have rankings and prizes.
Pairings are swiss based, with biases to avoid playing familiar opponents, similar tables, or different skill levels. Players less interested in gameplay can also specify this to allow the more competitive players to be matched against each other in the first round.
The categories are:
Sportsmanship This accounts for 35% of a player's overall score. At the end of each game, each player is awarded points by their opponent for their behavior. At the end of the event, each player will also award a bonus to their favorite opponent. The organizer may additionally add or remove points based on outside observations.
Hobby This accounts for 35% of a player's overall score. At the start of the event, each player will set their army out for display. All other players can then award points to those armies that they feel are best painted, have the coolest conversions, etc. The organizer may additionally add or remove points.
Generalship This accounts for 30% of a player's overall score. This is based purely on the game outcome and the difference in victory points between the players.
Depending on the size of the event, each category's top 1-3 places may receive a prize and additional overall prizes awarded based on total scores.
